Glen of Aherlow

28 April 2026

The Glen of Aherlow had been on my photographic bucket list for several years when I finally got the chance to capture it on camera. On a previous visit, I’d been greeted by classic Irish rainy weather. Nevertheless, the lush green pastures set against the backdrop of the Galtee Mountains and the Slievenamuck Hills made a lasting impression and stuck in my mind. So I was even happier when I finally managed to visit in good light.

One of the best tips for getting the most out of a photography location is to stay there overnight. This gives you plenty of time to capture the scene in the evening and morning with different lighting conditions. It also allows you to soak up the atmosphere without any rush. One thing I noticed was that cars kept stopping briefly along the road near the Christ the King statue. They weren’t pilgrims, but people who were captivated by the view. These spontaneous pauses may best describe the Glen of Aherlow. It is a place to let your gaze wander and be enchanted by nature.

For landscape photography, a great spot is the viewpoint near the statue mentioned above. From here, you can capture almost the entire valley and the Galtees opposite. Sunrise in particular offers a magnificent spectacle. Little by little, the first rays of sunlight touch the peaks before slowly making their way down into the valleys. Moments like these, when the light shapes the landscape, are what make photography in Ireland so fascinating to me.
