The Beara Peninsula in the southwest of Ireland is full of remarkable stone circles. One of the most beautiful examples is the Uragh Stone Circle – the May image of my Ireland Calendar 2019. It is believed that these ancient stones were once the scene of rituals. But also calendar functions are attributed to some stone circles, which for example are aligned in an axis to prominent points in the landscape at which the sun rises or sets at a certain point in the year.
