Old cross at St. Brendan's Well, Valentia Island, Co. Kerry, Ireland

Ancient cross on Valentia Island

This photo was taken close to St. Brendan’s well on Valentia Island – a unique spot of unspoiled environment and remoteness. The cross is part of a pilgrims trail surrounds the holly well.

Legend goes that St. Brendan sailed across Dingle bay to baptize two dying pagans right here. There is speculation that St. Brendan, also called “The Navigator”, sailed across the Atlantic ocean to North America – nearly 1000 years before Christopher Columbus.
