The Black Forest, with its dense forests and picturesque valleys, is a well-known and popular hiking area, even beyond the borders of Germany. Landscape photographers will find plenty of magical photo opportunities in this diverse natural setting. For me, who originates from a village at the edge of the Black Forest, the Black Forest has always been a playground for testing new equipment or for improving my photography technique – just a short journey, camera backpack on my shoulders and there I go.

My favourite photographic subjects in the Black Forest include wild waterfalls and tranquil lakes. If you catch the right moment, the interplay of light, water and forest will reward you with a unique atmosphere for magical landscape shots. Many of the photo spots in the Black Forest can only be reached by foot, and that's exactly what makes photography here so special. On the way to such a spot, you can immerse yourself in the tranquility and unspoilt nature and discover other scenes along the path. In the early morning and late evening hours, the low sun makes the Black Forest look particularly mysterious. However, to be in the right place at the right time, you have to hike through the dark forest, which reminds you why the Romans gave the area the name ‘Silva Nigra’, meaning ‘Black Forest’.
